After the resignation of Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, the self-proclaimed “Prime Minister of the Indigenous People,” the reconciliation process between the Australian government and the aboriginal communities is marked by uncertainty.
Despite being one of the most developed countries in the world, Australia does not recognize indigenous people in its constitution and has allowed a military intervention that has hindered the progress of reconciliation between the government and these communities. Recently, newly elected Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has promised to continue efforts to remedy the issue, but many doubt his willingness to make the 2017 referendum that would grant constitutional recognition to the aborigines a priority.
